Breathing in the fresh air from the water, a light mist is rising from the surface allowing the air to cool even more as the sun sets further. My cloak warms me, although I have pulled the hood down to my shoulders so I can take in more of the scene. I sit cross-legged with the cloak lying over and around me where only a sliver of my front is visible, my long red hair hanging almost touching the rock beneath me. I close my eyes and begin to meditate, chant, and rejuvenate my own spirit. There is a man off to the side watching me. I look at him and he smiles at me.

           “Who are you?”

“I am your Grandfather. I am here to journey with you through our history and teach you many great things.”

“What is your name, Grandfather? Where are we?”

“Charles. This is the world I knew many, many years ago. This is the place you live now. Virginia was chosen for its natural beauty and power.”

“Why did I talk about spirits needing me? What is this dream?”

Joshua came into my room, ignoring all rules as he helped push the dresser further from the wall, knocking it to the floor allowing me more than enough room to grab the journal and go. I tossed it inside the pack and Joshua put the map inside before we stepped out of my bedroom. I glanced down the hall, not sure what I expected to see. To the right the dormitory had been hit, and a roar of smoke and fire filled the confined space. Jacqueline was gone. Hand-in-hand we ran in the opposite direction toward the staircase.

My eyes burned. Coughing, I refused to let go of his hand as we stepped outside. Drones weren’t the only things attacking Haven. Tanks rolled into town. A few soldiers jumped off, taking over the perimeter, guns drawn. I paused, gripping Joshua’s hand as we were shrouded in smoke. Just a few feet away, a soldier lifted his weapon and unleashed fury on a group of innocent people. I covered my mouth with my hand to keep from crying out when a child no older than three hit the cement. His eyes remained open as blood seeped from his head. He didn’t move. Didn’t blink. It took only a moment to realize he’d died instantly. All I could do was stand there in shock.

“We have to move,” I heard Joshua’s voice, but it didn’t register. The smoke swirled around us and gunfire erupted in every direction. He grabbed my arm. “Olivia, I need you to focus.” I nodded once, trying my best to clear the cobwebs from my mind. I couldn’t, though. I wanted to run out to the child and protect him, but it was too late. I was too late. They were here because of me, innocent blood on my hands. I felt the heat radiating from the dormitory and my eyes flashed back. “I need you here with me, Olive.”

“I am,” I insisted, knowing if I didn’t focus we’d both be dead. I spotted more soldiers – their standard issue uniform and the Cabal crest on their jacket sleeve told me all I needed to know. The government had come looking for us. “Which way?” I couldn’t see the exit. With the smoke enveloping us and the fear coursing through my veins, I forgot the direction we’d come from.

Alert, Jen backed away from the tree and studied it at a crouch. The air was still. The grass motionless. But the leaves stirred and fluttered. Words floated down. At first they were indistinct, as if someone called through a distant snowstorm. One word emerged clearly, and an icy finger traced down her spine.

She heard her name.

She backed away until she squatted on some rocks that extended into the pool. Every muscle—sun-hammered and wind-hardened like metal in a forge—was poised to spring. Phrases whispered down. The only sense she could make was that something was coming. Something dangerous.

She thought of her family. Fear tightened around her heart. She was a hair’s-breadth away from running to them. Her feet stayed rooted to the spot. Maybe she’d hear more.

A small splash made her look at the pond. Two more followed, as if someone had thrown pebbles. Nothing had fallen into the water. But ripples spread out and ran into each other. More splashes erupted like tiny volcanoes, until the whole pool was agitated with colliding rings. A circle of calm emerged below Jen’s feet, pushing the waves back. Pale and ghostly, a face rose from the muddy bottom of the pool until it floated just below the surface.

Young Adult writers wanted for our imprint and management divisions.

Evatopia is having an open call for young adult writers. We’re looking for unique stories told in a new way and featuring young, female protagonists.

Stories should show potential to be adapted for the television or film markets. Easier said than done because we’re looking for unique worlds, solving problems in an interesting manner, and while romance is a plus, it shouldn’t be at the forefront of the story.

If you’re interested in having Evatopia read your work, simply submit a logline (a quick one sentence description of your story) to: submissions@evatopia.com.

Mattie and Pearlie live in the deep south in the 1940s. Being poor, Black and in love, made it almost impossible to exist in a world filled with bias and racism. Mysticism and spirituality are the underlying themes in this book about women who survive horrendous oppression by using common sense and mother wit.

This powerful novel deal with important themes such as race relations, coming of age, and the power of love. Below is an excerpt…

“I found the body hanging from the rafters of Momma Appie’s barn when I was seven years old. I stood staring at the figure, its head slumped to the side, face all twisted up, eyes bulging from the sockets. I was frozen there, caught in that space and time.

I heard Momma Appie calling me to supper. I moved my mouth, and at first nothing came out but air. Then the fog lifted from my head and I saw her face put back in place. Her eyes dancing like the last time I saw her. My soul escaped from my mouth as I screamed Momma!”
