The Holly Project by KA Sterritt

By Margery Walshaw

Screen shot 2014-12-21 at 5.37.06 PM“One foot in front of the other. Breathe in, breathe out.”

Holly Ashton hasn’t celebrated her birthday since her mother passed away. Instead, it’s the one day of the year that she allows herself to grieve. The rest of the year is spent pretending to be the strong and independent woman she wants to be.

Professionally, she has it all together. A great job as an architect at Sydney’s most prestigious firm keeps her focused.

Her personal life is far less charmed. Emotionally detached from everyone other than her small circle of friends and family, relationships are a no-go zone.

Life is exactly how she wants it to be – until the day of her twenty-fifth birthday.
A chance encounter with Ryan Davenport, CEO of a property development firm, turns her tightly controlled life upside down.

Ryan is driven, ambitious and used to getting what he wants – and very unexpectedly, what he wants is the beautiful, smart-mouthed Holly Ashton.

When neither of them believes in happily ever afters, how are they supposed to find their own?

Read an excerpt of The Holly Project…

As daylight started to filter through my blinds, I heard Dad’s car rumble down the driveway. I dragged myself out of bed and headed to the kitchen.

“Your mother is gone, Holly,” whispered my father. I felt my legs give way.

They were the words I had been dreading for months. I was mature for my age – watching your mother deteriorate will do that to a girl – but at that moment, I felt like a naive child. One who’d been hoping for a miracle.

“Her heart gave out early this morning. She couldn’t be revived,” he choked. “She’s not suffering anymore.”

I was only half listening. All I could think about was the last time I’d seen her.

Sitting on the kitchen floor with my face buried in my bent knees, I let the tears fall. I cried for the pain she’d suffered since her cancer returned a year ago. I cried for the enormous hole she was leaving in our family. I cried for the eternal grief my father was going to endure. I cried for April and Jamie, who barely knew her. But most of all, I cried because I was weak and I knew, from then on, I needed to be strong…

Happy birthday to me.

The Druid’s Doorway by S.G. Daniels

By Margery Walshaw

The Druid's DoorwayThe Druid’s Doorway by S.G. Daniels…

Jake Reese thinks he’s just a screwed-up high school kid living in a small town isolated in the Arizona desert. Traumatized at an early age by his mother’s sudden death—and believing he might have had something to do with it—he’s allowed his guilt and lack of self-confidence to rule his life.

Hailey is the fiery little redhead that sees Jake as more than a just a good friend. When she invites him as her date to a school function, it brings down the walls he’s built to protect his heart, and sets off a series of events that threaten not only Jake’s life, but that of everyone around him.

The discovery of a portal on the outskirts of town brings Jake face-to-face with death and reveals a closely guarded secret about his mother. No longer is his memory of her the only thing that haunts him. Something evil from her past has escaped through the portal, and nothing will prevent it from trying to steal Jake’s future.

Can Jake overcome his fears to keep Hailey safe? Will the decisions he’s forced to make destroy everyone he knows and loves? And ultimately…is he strong enough to live with those choices?

“I know you have questions for me after hearing all of this. There’s more of the story to tell, a lot more actually, but I thought I’d give you a break and a little time to take it all in.”

Hailey was the first to say something. “I’ll go to the kitchen and bring something back for us to drink. That should give you a chance to have a little family privacy.” She started to get up from her seat on the sofa.

Jake reached for her hand and gently pulled her back down next to him. “If you don’t mind, Hailey, I’d rather you stayed. You are part of this family, as far as I’m concerned. Please?”

He looked at her imploringly and she eased back in next to him, giving him a comforting smile. Then she wrapped his hand in both of hers. “Sure, I’ll stay if you want me to.”

The room was silent, but strangely enough, not awkward. Jake cleared his throat, and Gavin felt a surge of relief wash over him. He was worried Jake would walk out, and he wouldn’t have blamed him if he did. This was a bitter pill to swallow, but he knew the look on Jake’s face. It was the one he saw when his son was ready to face something head-on and deal with it. Jake wasn’t running from it…yet.

“So,” Jake said slowly, “you’re saying she started to walk through an opening into another dimension…and she did this while she had me inside of her.”

Jerod ignored his words and lowered the business end of his laser rifle until the barrel was level with Solan’s forehead. “You may be tough, Solan, but are you laser-to-the-head-at-point-blank-range tough? I wonder.”

“What do you want from me, human?”

“The girl. Release her to us—now.”

“The female is mine.”

“Suit yourself. I’ll be sure to put ‘The female is mine’ in big letters on your tombstone when I bury you. Then again, a pain in the ass like you deserves an unmarked grave, wouldn’t you agree?” Jerod braced his weapon and prepared to pull the trigger.

“Wait!” Solan shouted.

Jerod hesitated for a second.

A second was all that Solan needed. With superhuman strength, he grabbed the woman with both hands and flung her up at Jerod like a toy—but not before sinking his yellow teeth into the tender flesh of her right palm. A glistening trail of lycan saliva, commingled with the female pilot’s blood, and ran down her hand as she collided with Jerod.

“You want her, you can have her. But she is still mine. Let’s see how long you will keep her when she changes before your very eyes!” With that, Solan sprang to his feet and fled with his remaining men who survived the attack. By the time Jerod caught the woman in his arms and laid her gently on the ground, Solan was gone.

Taking heed to her watch’s warning, Rayna quickly hid herself behind the corner of a brick wall and shoved her glowing hand in her pocket. Then she saw it.

It stood over eight feet tall, and oozed a dripping, green ichor from every part of its scaly body. Its face resembled a nightmarish hybrid of boar, and lizard—creased and knotted—like heavy clay molded into monstrosity.

Its bulging eyes had lids that closed horizontally, and as the creature squinted in the daylight sun, only its elongated red pupils showed through. It was an undeniable rendition of evil personified. Its pointed-toothed mouth opened and closed repeatedly, as if rehearsing for its next meal. Rayna dared not breathe; she feared the sound of her own pounding heart would give her away…

Take a peek into the mysterious world of The Stream with this excerpt:

I pulled my old bones from the skiff, swearing for the thousandth time that I should’ve died long ago. Feeling the years most in my fingers, I tugged my mittens snug, secured the vessel with an awkward knot, and made for the campfire. Half a dozen shadows huddled near the flames, which threw flickering gold upon the surrounding rocks and stream.

I squatted by the fire, turning my hands to warm them, and then fished out the last of my flatbread from my rucksack. I broke off a piece and offered it to the man nearest me.

He surveyed me with steely eyes, which peered from the shadow of a low-pulled hat. “I’ve got mine,” he said, holding up duck still dripping on a spit.

Shrugging, I nibbled my bread—grateful that the fire kept the piercing cold of the night at bay—when a small movement near the rocks caught my eye.
